“Sarkozy: Iranian people deserve better leaders”

French News Agency- August 31, 2009, Berlin-

Nicolas Sarkozy, president of France, harshly criticized the Iranian leadership and believes that Iranians deserve someone better than Ahmadinejad.

On Monday, during his discussion with Angela Merkel, Chancellor of Germany, Serkozy stated, ”Iranian people deserve a leadership much better than what they have now. I want to emphasize how much we appreciate the bravery of the Iranian people.”

Merkel and Sarkozy both said that if Tehran is defeated by the UN during their discussion over Iran’s atomic program, they will request for more extreme restrictions on Iran.

Merkel said, ”it is important that we receive a clear message from Iran, stating whether or not they are willing to discuss the situation, or whether or not they accept the decisions of the UN. If they don’t do so, then in September in Pittsburgh (in G20 meetings on 24th and 25th of September) we will discuss further limitations on Iran.”

She also said, ”Both France and Germany believe that in this case, more restrictions should be put upon Iran.”

On Friday, the Deputy Foreign Minister of Russia said that the five members of the UN Security Council (Great Britain, China, France, Russia and USA), along with Germany, will gather somewhere near Frankfurt on Wednesday to discuss Iran.

Iran has continued with its uranium enrichment activities, disregarding the limitations set upon the country by UN Security Council. This process can produce fuel for atomic electricity facilities, but also can be used to produce atomic bombs. The permanent members of the UN Security Council, along with Germany, will make a powerful contact group of six countries against Iran.
